Examples of Federated Systems
The initial Federated Environment that has been focused on is a Government domain that will be integrated with healthcare, education and municipal.
There are other examples where a federated environment beyond government. A federated architecture is useful to organizations that have multiple business units or locations that have unique needs and need to exchange information and aggregate data.
Each entity may have different business requirements, regulations, and operating procedures, yet they share much of the same underlying information.
Examples of federated environments include:
-
Labour unions: A national union, such as the Carpenters' Union, may have hundreds of locals with different collective agreements, benefit plans, and operating requirements. Each local can maintain its own system while exchanging membership information and aggregating data nationally.
-
Large Consulting Companies: Offices in different locations that have unique requirements. Each office can operate a tailored Time and Billing system while the company aggregates financial, project, and resource information globally. A time and billing application has already been constructed.
-
Professional associations: Organizations such as CPA Canada and provincial CPA bodies have common professional standards but different jurisdictional requirements. Each organization can operate independently while sharing appropriate membership, certification, and continuing education information.
-
Oil and gas: Producers, joint venture partners, service companies, laboratories, and regulators exchange information about wells, production, services, contracts, and financial transactions.
-
Manufacturing and supply chains: Manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and logistics providers operate independent systems that exchange orders, inventory, shipments, and other operational information.
